What is Cub Scouts?

Cub Scouts is a year-round program that offers fun activities that promote character and leadership development. Our program is designed to be hands-on, and parents are encouraged to play an active role in our programs.

Scouting embraces the outdoors through camping, hiking and water sports. We also focus on helping our communities through service projects, STEM development and building confident kids through our wide range of activities. The Cub Scout program is designed to develop physical, mental and emotional fitness. Fitness includes the body (well-tuned and healthy), the mind (able to think and solve problems), and the emotions (self-control, courage, and self-respect).

Cub Scouts are broken into small groups called a Pack, which is then broken into smaller groups, by age, called Dens. The Pack you join is up to you. You can look for a Pack chartered by an organization you support, or simply choose the one closest to your neighborhood. With tens of thousands of Cub Scout Packs across the country, it shouldn’t be hard to find one that fits you and your family.  We think our Pack is the best and invite you to find out why!

Each Pack has dedicated leaders and volunteers who are tasked with teaching Cub Scouts both fun and valuable lessons that will help them progress in the program and in life. But what makes Cub Scouts truly unique is the opportunity it gives the entire family to be involved in each child’s development. From volunteering with the Pack or Den to leading activities at home, parents can take full advantage of the extra time they’ll have to participate in their Cub Scout's life.

Pack Committee

Every pack is under the supervision of a Pack Committee, which consists of at least three members (chair, secretary, and treasurer). By handling administrative and support tasks, the Pack Committee allows the Cubmaster, Den Leaders, and their assistants to focus on working directly with the Cub Scouts.  Pack 22 has a Pack Committee of 9, but we're always looking for more help.  Do you have a special skill or knowledge that you think would be helpful to our committee?  Let us know and join today!

FAQ

Joining Cub Socuting

What do Cub Scouts do in Pack 22?

Cub Scouts go on adventures and have FUN!  Have you been to the local police station and spoke with the policemen on duty? Or visited the fire station and sat in the driver's seat of the pumper truck? Or visited the local TV station and sat in the news anchor's chair? These are some of the places you'll go with your Den or Pack.

You'll also build a Pinewood Derby car and race it on the track, build a sailboat or trimaran and race it in the Rain Gutter Regatta, or build a spaceship and race it to the stars in the Pack Space Derby.

Each time you complete an accomplishment or learn a new skill, you will be rewarded. Sometimes the reward is a loop for your belt, a pin, or a patch. Sometimes it is a smile on your parents' faces to see you grow and learn.

What else do Cub Scouts in Pack 22 do?

On top of weekly and monthly meetings, Cub Scouts meet and go on hikes, march in parades, participate in community service projects, go on monthly campouts, shoot BBs and arrows at Summer Camp, go swimming, sleep over night at Battleship Cove and the Museum of Science in Boston, and other adventures!

Cub Scouts in Pack 22 are invited to camp out with the scouts in the "older" Scouts BSA Troop 22 every month!  We attend Summer Camp, Battleship Cove, and the Museum of Science every year.  Come join the fun!

How often do Cub Scouts in Pack 22 meet?

The Dens in Pack 22 meet once a week.  These are called Den meetings.  Weekly Den meetings are like stepping-stones: each week your child progresses a little further toward the next rank, learning skills as they go.  While the meetings include games and other activities that are fun for the kids, program delivery is the main goal. Cub Scouts participate in activities and work on projects that are related to an adventure and that help them learn the skills they need to progress in rank.

Once a month we have a large meeting, where all the Dens meet together and have an award ceremony and a party!  This is called a Pack meeting.  The monthly Pack meetings are like milestones that mark achievements along the Cub Scout trail and celebrate accomplishments along the way.  We race our Raingutter Regatta boats, Pinewood Derby cars, and Space Derby rockets at these meetings.  We also built and raced our Hovercraft and Soapbox Derby cars!

How much does it cost to join Pack 22?

Registration is only $80.00 for the entire year.  Our children participate in several fundraisers throughout the year to offset the costs of trips, and scholarships are available.  No child is turned away from an event because they cannot afford it.

How can I become an adult volunteer in Cub Scouting?

Express your interest to the Pack leaders—the Cubmaster, chartered organization representative, or members of the unit committee. They can help you understand the process and guide you in areas where the Pack needs support. Pack 22 welcomes parent help.

May parents attend meetings?

Scouting is open to parents at all times. Den meetings are intended to be an activity for the individual kids, and your Den leader will be working hard to keep the Cub Scouts focused. Your Den Leader would love your help at meetings!

Uniform and Supplies

What supplies and equipment are needed to participate in Cub Scouting?

At the minimum, each kiddo in Cub Scouting will need a uniform shirt, belt, and a handbook. Each year, they will need a new handbook.  You can also buy a hat, and neckerchief based on the Den your child is in; other uniform parts remain the same for at least the first three years. When your child enters a Webelos Den, you may choose to obtain a khaki uniform shirt that they will wear throughout the rest of Boy Scouts.

Additional supplies and equipment may be needed for certain activities such as camping trips or field days. Pack and Troop 22 have many supplies that you can borrow if needed.

Where can I purchase BSA literature, uniforms, and other program materials?

Visit our local Scout Shop in Woburn MA.

600 Cummings Park Dr

Woburn, MA 01801
(781) 937-4282

How can I save money on the cost of uniforms and equipment?

Pack 22 operates a uniform exchange or uniform bank.  If you take a uniform from the bank, we only ask that you return it when your child out-grows it or you decide to no longer participate in Scouts. Pack 22 also awards the kids rank-specific uniform components, like most of their patches, and all of their rank advancements, belt-loops, and pins.

Advancement and Awards

When a Cub Scout earns the Arrow of Light, may they immediately join a Scout Troop?

Scouting is available to boys and girls who have earned the Arrow of Light and are at least 10 years old—so a Webelos Scout who has earned the Arrow of Light is eligible to join Troop 22 immediately (provided they are at least 10 years old).

May Cub Scouts earn badges such as the 50-Miler Award or Mile Swim, BSA?

Cub Scouts are not eligible to earn these awards, which are part of the Scout program. All of the awards that Cub Scouts may earn are listed in their handbooks.

If a child joins a Bear Den, may they go back and earn the Tiger and Wolf badges?

No. In the Cub Scout program, all kiddos in a Den work toward the same badge. If a child joins Cub Scouting as a 9-year-old, they must earn the Bobcat badge (all kids in Cub Scouting earn this badge), and then they will begin working on the Bear badge with their fellow Cub Scouts.  They are not required to have earned the Tiger or Wolf badges. Since those badges are for younger kids (7- and 8-year-olds), the requirements for those badges are not consistent with a 9-year-old's current level of ability, so "going back" to pick up those badges is not permitted.

If a child completes the Wolf badge early, may they begin working on the Bear badge?

No. In the Cub Scout program, all kiddos in a Den work toward a badge that is geared to their level of development. If the Wolf badge is completed before the end of the program year, they may work on elective adventures, but they may not begin working on the requirements for the Bear badge.  Their work on the Bear badge will begin the next program year when they graduate into a Bear Den.
